Frequently Asked Questions
Answers about privacy, offline use and what Edge Tools can do.
What is Edge Tools?
Edge Tools is a privacy-first collection of 300+ file and developer tools that run entirely in your browser. It handles PDFs, images, audio and video, encoders, hashing and language playgrounds using the same powerful engines you’d find in desktop apps — and because nothing is uploaded, even confidential files never leave your device.
Is Edge Tools free?
Yes — every tool is free to use, with no paywall, usage limits or sign-up.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. Every file you open is processed locally on your own device. Nothing is uploaded to a server, so your documents, photos and media never leave your computer — that is what makes Edge Tools private by design.
Does Edge Tools work offline?
Mostly, yes. Once a page has loaded, most tools keep working with no internet connection at all, because the processing happens on your device rather than on a server.
Do I need an account or to install anything?
Neither. There is no account to create, nothing to download and no plugins to install. You just need a modern browser — open a tool and start working immediately.
Is there a file size limit?
There is no server-imposed upload cap, because nothing is uploaded. The practical limit is your device’s available memory, so large files work fine on most modern computers — bigger machines simply handle bigger files.
What can I do with PDFs and images?
You can compress, merge, split, convert and organize PDFs, fill and sign forms, and run OCR. For images you can convert, compress, resize, crop, remove backgrounds, upscale with AI, optimize PNG and JPEG, and edit EXIF data — all in the browser.
Can I convert and compress audio and video?
Yes. Edge Tools converts, compresses, trims and merges audio and video, turns video into GIFs, and inspects media — all right in your browser. It can also transcribe and generate subtitles locally using Whisper AI.
Which programming languages can I run?
Edge Tools includes 40+ language playgrounds, including Python, JavaScript, PHP, Go, Rust, C, C++, Java, SQL, Shell and Mermaid. Each runs entirely in your browser, so you can experiment with code without setting up a local environment.
How is my data and privacy handled?
Privacy is the default. Files are never uploaded, there are no tracking cookies and no fingerprinting, and Edge Tools uses only privacy-respecting analytics that collect no personal data. Because everything is processed on your device, it is safe for confidential, medical, financial, legal and personal data — your content stays on your machine.
